Skiing In New Mexico – A Family Tradition

Nov 25, 2014 by monica

Skiing in New Mexico is all about connections. Connections to family, to friends, and to the special places that create such warm memories year after year.

Whether you’re visiting from another state or live just a short drive away, there’s something truly magical about these unique winter destinations that keep people returning to rediscover the joy.

Donna Hirschhauser and her family have been visiting Sipapu for 17 years, making the 16-hour trek from South Texas to Northern New Mexico every spring break since her now-grown kids were in grade school. The Hirschhausers fell in love with the cozy, family-friendly slopes at Sipapu where they never worried about being swept up in excessive hustle and bustle.

“When the boys were younger, I could always get to them – or spy them doing something they shouldn’t – from almost anywhere on the mountain,” Hirschhuaser said. “Now that they’re in their 20s, they’re a little tougher to catch up to, but we all still love how relaxed it is on the slopes. The lift lines are short, it’s easy to find friends and family, and our lodging is just a short walk away which gives you the freedom to do what you want with your day.”

The Hirschhuasers’ spring break stories even inspired other families from their hometown in Inez, Texas to join them on their annual trip to New Mexico, adding to the special experience for Donna and her family.

“Sipapu has been our winter home every year for 17 years and we’ve been happy to share it with our friends,” she said. “Cooking meals at our rooms, playing games until we can no longer keep our eyes open – it’s just a great family adventure and will always have a warm place in our hearts.”

For New Mexicans, there’s even more opportunities to enjoy their favorite locations.

Albuquerque resident Sara Bonnell has been skiing in New Mexico since she could walk and now hits the slopes with her young family (two children, ages, 7, and 9) several times throughout the season. Bonnell and her husband have skied in neighboring states, but between the ease of travel, small crowds, and outstanding conditions, she said her home state is a clear winner.

“We’ve skied all over, but the challenging terrain at Taos Ski Valley is definitely our favorite,” Bonnell said. “Our kids love the ski school and we can’t get enough of the great food. We may not have to travel far to get there, but every trip we make is something special for our family.”

That’s what skiing in the Land of Enchantment is all about. Moments of joy, wonder, and togetherness, creating memories that last a lifetime.

30″ of New Snow at Angel Fire

Nov 19, 2014 by monica

Last weekends storms blanketed the mountain at Angel Fire with 30 inches of fresh snow. “With over two and a half feet of pre-season snowfall to date, we’re anticipating some of the best opening conditions in years,” said Ed Cohen, chief marketing officer at Angel Fire Resort in northern New Mexico.

Other areas around the state also saw some great snowfall to start the season.  With colder temperatures areas are taking advantage and cranking up their snow-making efforts.

George Brooks, Ski New Mexico director, said he’s hopeful that resort upgrades and forecasts that call for more consistent moisture through the winter will help the state hit the million-skier mark this season.

Angel Fire Resort opens December 12 and now is the time to plan your winter getaway!

Sipapu Open for 2014/15 Season

Nov 17, 2014 by monica

Winter enthusiasts will carve their first turns of the season when the lifts open at 9 a.m. this Saturday at Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort, located 20 miles southeast of Taos and just over two hours north of Albuquerque. The November 15 opening date will mark the 12th consecutive time northern New Mexico’s oldest ski area has opened before any other ski area in the state, and it will be the earliest opening in recent resort history.

Mountain Manager John Paul Bradley said he will open the mountain’s two magic carpets, three or four trails – including the mountain’s beginner hill, called the Practice Slope – and a small terrain park on Saturday.

“For years, Sipapu has not only been the first ski area to open in New Mexico, but we’ve been able to open our main lift starting right out of the gates,” he said. “Opening our Practice Slope is the way we always used to do things, so it feels a little nostalgic to do that again. As with every year, we – like all of our guests – can’t wait to get the 2014-2015 winter started, and we are proud to kick off New Mexico’s ski and snowboard season at Sipapu.”

Bradley said he expects to open the main lift, Lift #1, in the upcoming days as temperatures continue to cool and his snowmakers get more opportunities to blanket Sipapu’s slopes with snow. He credited his snowmakers – which, he says, are still working around the clock to get the mountain ready – for successfully securing New Mexico’s opening date.

The magic carpets will operate this Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the resort will be open everyday for Thanksgiving week starting Friday, November 21, through Sunday, November 30. Daily operations are scheduled to begin on Friday, December 5.

Starting this weekend, all lift tickets are discounted: adult tickets are $25, teens (ages 13-20) are $19, and kids (ages 7-12) and seniors (ages 61 and older) pay just $15. As with every season, kids ages 6 and younger, 4th and 5th graders and guests who are ages 40, 60 or 70 years and better receive a free lift ticket everyday. This year, 5thgraders get a free lift ticket by presenting a report card, too.
