Feb 26, 2015 by monica

Snow totals as of Feb. 26. Please see snow report for current totals!!

You may not need a snorkel yet but you can get lots of face shots!  New Mexico ski areas are getting hammered with snow and there is more on the way.  Forecasts are showing as much as two to three feet additional snowfall for New Mexico over the next 7 days.  Area operators are excited about the recent snow and are looking forward to having great snow through the month of March.

Red River Ski & Summer Area

Red River has seen 37 inches in the last 5 days. Deputy General Manager, Walt Foley, stated, “we have the best ski conditions in a few years…for sure!” “ With almost three feet of snow so far in the past week and more forecasted daily for the next 7 days, our spring break guests are going to experience an awesome ski and ride experience not to mention their first ride on the Pioneer Flyer (weather permitting),” said Walt.  Our family welcomes your family to come up and enjoy the Red River Ski & Summer Area.

Ski Santa Fe

Snowing began falling at Ski Santa Fe on Tuesday morning. It received 8 inches, taking its base to 44 inches. The ropes have even dropped on most of the last terrain to typically open, Big Rock Chutes. Chutes No. 1-4 are skiing hip deep. Join them for locals appreciation day, March 5th  where everyone is a local and recieve $25 off your ticket!  Join the party at Totemoff’s with live music by “The Bus Tapes” from 12pm – 3PM  and enjoy 25% off local tap beers plus the grill will be open all day at 25% off.

Taos Ski Valley

They finally got the dump it’s been waiting for all season, picking up 20 inches and pushing its base to 57 inches. It is currently hosting the Solomon Extreme Freeride Championships, with the finals scheduled for Saturday on Kachina Peak. Also on Feb. 28 is the annual Telemark Fiesta, which will include a fun race, instruction for all levels, and a transceiver location training exercise.

Pajarito

“Mother Nature has finally awoken in New Mexico. 5 inches here, not much during the day today, but “she” is scheduled to return tonight,” said Tom Long with Pajarito. They are reporting a 30–inch base, with 31 of 44 runs open. On March 14, the area will host its annual Skiesta, with costume events, ski competitions, the Pajarito Mountain King and Queen contest, suds from eight local breweries at the New Mexico Beer Association Beer Garden and live music by the Sean Healen Band.

Angel Fire Resort

As of Thursday Angel Fire Resort had received 15” of new snow and over 3 feet in the past 5 days. It’s still snowing very heavy and forecasters are expecting for them to receive an additional foot of snow before Monday. “We are definitely expecting this to be the best snow week of the season so far,” said Robin May, Angel Fire Resort. They have 76 of their 79 runs open -even Silver Chute, Upper Domingo and Maxwell’s Grant — are now open. It is retro weekend and don’t forget to check out the Dos Equis Big Air Bag sets up in the base area from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come test your courage in old school style!

Sipapu

They have 9 new inches and is sitting on a 32-inch base, with 93 percent of its runs open. Marketing manager, Stacy Glaser said, “Like all of our guests, we are excited about the incredible snow that’s been falling throughout the Southwest, and we’re equally eager to see what happens with this next storm. All indicators are pointing to another big, snowy weekend at all of our mountains.”

Sandia Peak

Sandia Peak is reporting a few new inches and a 20-inch base. The resort will be operating on a weekend-only basis to the close of the season.

Ski Apache

Ski Apache got 6” last night and they are reporting a 30″ base! Their biggest total for the season was when they got over 24” in 48 hours. “We are very lucky to have had such a great season and we are really looking forward to our spring break events including a Vertical GPS Challenge and a Beach Body and Pond Skim Contest coming up March 7th and 16th respectively. We hope you can come and join us! Now go get some of that fresh powder!”

Ski the Powder Like a Pro!

Feb 17, 2015 by monica

When you ski New Mexico, there’s no shortage of light, dry powder. Cold temperatures and low humidity combine to keep the snow soft and nice at resorts throughout the state.

Skiing powder can present its own unique technical challenges though. To maximize our fun and minimize the risk of injury, we visited some of New Mexico’s top instructors to see how best to thrive in the soft stuff.

Tom Long | Pajarito Mountain Ski Area

First stop was the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area outside of Los Alamos, N.M. which boasts some of the best powder in the Land of Enchantment (to go along with surprisingly short lift lines). Pajarito’s general manager, Tom Long, shared his top tips for enjoying a fun, injury-free day in the powder.

“Pick a slope that’s in your comfort range,” Long said. “Start out slowly, but try to remain in the fall line. Turning too much across the slope can really cause some balance issues.”

For skiers, Long said it’s important to keep your weight balanced on the skis.

“Don’t pressure the downhill ski as much as you would on groomed or harder snow,” he said. “Work on developing a rhythm for your turns.”

According to Long, snowboarders should focus on many of the same principles.

“Rhythm, balance, and flow are the keys to success for enjoying the fluff,” he said. “Keep increasing the terrain as you get comfortable, stay balanced on your equipment and enjoy.”

Jeff Mugleston | Taos Ski Valley

Next we headed north to the Taos Ski Valley and spent some time with Jeff Mugleston, manager and longtime instructor at the Ernie Blake Snowsports School. Mugleston said skiing in deep powder is akin to water skiing in the summer.

“How much fun is it to water ski at 5 miles per hour?” he asked. “That’s called snorkeling. Momentum is your friend when skiing powder to help you plane on the snow.”

Mugleston said today’s modern skis offer greater width that help them “float” to the top of the powder.

“Tip your skis to sink them in the powder and flatten them to rise back to the surface,” he said. “Don’t forget to keep your lower abs contracted to avoid the head plant!”

Robin May | Angel Fire Resort

Finally, after a beautiful 45-minute drive along the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, we arrived at the Angel Fire Resort and met up with Ski & Snowboard School director Robin May who offered more important pointers.

Like Mugleston, May said it was important to first choose the right equipment — wide boards for both skis and snowboards. Then, he warned against making long, finished turns on the slopes.

“Allowing your feet and hips to follow too far across the hill is unnecessary and too much work,” he said. “Start on a moderately sloped pitch and be prepared to make shorter radius turns down the fall line.”

In a straight run, May said to start by bouncing softly with both feet.

“Now your skis can porpoise in and out of the snow,” he said. “Continue by adding a strong pole plant, allowing the skis to begin to deflect into small directional changes. Then add some active steering of both legs to develop into short radius turns.”

Above all else, May told us to remember one piece of advice.

“Never sit back,” he said “That’s an old wives tale from people who don’t know how to ski powder.”

With those great tips from some of the best in the business, there was nothing left to do but hit the slopes and enjoy the best of New Mexico’s soft powder!

Mardi Gras In The Mountains – Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler!

Feb 9, 2015 by monica

The best Mardi Gras party this side of the bayou is in Northern Mexico as the town of Red River hosts its legendary Mardi Gras In The Mountains festival, Feb. 12-17. Arrive early and stay late to catch all the parades, crawfish boils, costume balls, and, of course, beads! There’s so much for revelers of all ages to see and do as the community buzzes with excitement throughout the extended weekend leading up to Fat Tuesday.

Located along New Mexico’s Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, a 45-minute drive from Taos, Red River offers great, family-friendly skiing and snowboarding, as well as tubing, snow coach dinner tours, and more. However, Mardi Gras In The Mountains is one event that keeps visitors from near and far coming back to Red River each year to relive the fun.

We love the electricity that Mardi Gras in the Mountains brings to Red River,” said Red River Tourism Director Jacqueline Hester. “We add some Cajun flavor to what’s already a great getaway destination and make this one of the most exciting weeks of the year in Red River. We’re fortunate that the event falls on both Valentine’s Day and President’s Day Weekend this year so that more people can get a taste of what it’s all about and then come back for more in 2016!”

Check out all the great events happening during this year’s Mardi Gras In The Mountains:

Krewe Krawl & Burning of the Wild Tchopitoulas (Thursday)

The Wild Tchopitoulas is a fictional character that serves as a mascot for Mardi Gras in the Mountains. Similar to Zozobra (Old Man Gloom) in Santa Fe, each Mardi Gras kicks off with a foot parade down Main Street (Krewe Krawl) leading the Tchopitoulas to his final moments. Spectators are encouraged to write down their troubles and worries and toss them into the fire as the Tchopitoulas is burning. Once that is done, Mardi Gras in the Mountains can officially begin!

Drink Making Contest (Friday)

In what has become one of the most competitive events during Mardi Gras in the Mountains, various krewes show off their abilities to make a great drink and put on an even better show. Discover the Jewel of Southern New Mexico – Ruidoso!

Feb 4, 2015 by monica

Less that 150 miles from the Texas border, nestled amongst cool mountain pines, lies the beautiful village of Ruidoso, N.M. and America’s southernmost ski area, the Ski Apache resort. With a great snowfall this season and a wealth of entertainment options for the entire family, now is the perfect time to get reaquainted with one of New Mexico’s favorite winter destinations.

For skiers and snowboarders, it all starts with Ski Apache. The resort offers some of the best warm weather powder skiing in the world with snowmaking on 33% of the mountain. The slopes offer a mix of wide beginner slopes, tough bump runs, a huge bowl, nice cruising runs, and a terrain park with jumps, tubes, and rails.

One of the most special features of the resort is the Gazebo just below the 12,000-foot Sierra Blanca peak. Accessible by New Mexico’s only passenger Gondola, the ride to the top offers sweeping views of the pristine forest below followed by breathtaking panoramic views at the mountain top.

For those looking for an adrenaline-pumping ride back down the mountain, the Apache Wind Rider Zip Tour is a three-part zipline adventure that whisks you nearly 9,000 feet with top speeds hitting 65 miles per hour. Plus, with parallel cables, you can glide down the mountain side-by-side with your favorite person.

Back on terra firma, there’s plenty more to explore.

The sparkling Inn of the Mountain Gods — owned and operated by the Mescalero Apache Tribe — offers impeccable service, mouthwatering cuisine, hot gaming action, lively entertainment, a championship golf course, and more incredible alpine scenery to nurture your soul. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be enchanted by original works of art throughout the property, roaring fireplaces in the lobby, and a tranquil setting that makes the everyday world feel a million miles away.

Any season is the perfect time to wander the boutiques of Ruidoso’s walkable midtown shopping district for unique clothing, art, and hand-crafted Native American and designer jewelry. There’s also plenty of fabulous restaurants and bars to keep your palate happy.

Meanwhile, Old West buffs will love immersing themselves in the history of Billy the Kid Country by discovering historic Lincoln and Fort Stanton, where the Wild West lives on.

At the end of the day, do what Ruidoso does best — find a cabin in the woods, a full resort or luxury vacation rental and put your feet up on the deck. Take time to observe the wildlife, enjoy the cool breeze, and revel in the scenic beauty of one of the Land of Enchantment’s most unique mountain villages.
