5 Things to Know Before a Lesson

by Kelsie Stelting January 16, 2017

A lesson is a crucial part of learning to ski or snowboard and for the most effective lesson possible, it is important to be prepared. Remember going to school for the first time? You couldn’t just show up and expect it to go well. You had to bring your supplies, dress well, and most importantly, have the right mindset to be successful. Snowboarding is much the same.

Know the Lingo

Do you know what a toeside turn is? What about base? PPTT? Edge? Lift? Shredding? If you’re 100% new to winter sports, first, welcome to one of the greatest winter pastimes, and second, check out the Ski New Mexico Blog to familiarize yourself with the lingo so your first day on the mountain isn’t totally overwhelming.

Prepare for the Elements

All it takes to make a good day bad is a cold nose and wet fingers. Make sure that you have waterproof or resistant clothing and dress in warm layers. Learn more about what to pack here. This printable packing check list is a great resource for your skiing or snowboarding trip that will help you make sure you’re prepared when you hit the slopes!

Be Early

By the time you get all of your extra layers on, retrieve your lift tickets, rent your equipment, and walk to the training area, you’ll have spent about 45 minutes. Be sure to arrive 45 minutes to an hour before your lesson is scheduled to begin so you’re on time.

Humble Yourself

Very few things in life are certain, but I can guarantee you that you will spend just as much time with your bottom planted in the snow as you will standing on the board. When you’re having a hard time finding your edge and you’ve fallen down for what feels like the millionth time, remember that every person shredding by you on the trails started out exactly where you are now.

Prepare for the Aftermath

In the evening after your lesson, drink plenty of water, stretch, and get a good night’s sleep. In the morning, you’ll find bruises and discover sore muscles you didn’t even know you had. The best way to work out a sore muscle is to stretch and then go back out on the board and do it all over again!

If you’re curious about what a snowboarding lesson is like, you can read about my latest experience here. A snowboard or ski lesson will be such an incredible experience for you if you stick with it. You’ll make friends with your instructor and fellow learners, you’ll gain resilience and grit from trying something new and challenging, and, ultimately, you’ll get started on a new skill that will take you into the mountains every chance you get!
