Celebrate Mardi Gras in the Mountains This Year

Feb 18, 2020 by Kelsie Stelting

Fat Tuesday is a special day in New Mexico, as it represents a blending of culture, tradition, and fun that brings many people together to have a good time. This year, make your trip to Angel Fire or Red River even better by taking part in some fantastic Mardi Gras celebrations.

Angel Fire

The Fat Tuesday celebration kicks off in Angel Fire well before Feb. 25 with Hal’s Pals Mardi Gras celebration beginning Feb. 21. Throughout the week, there are activities that will appeal to people of all ages with varying interests. See some of the things you can do below!

Meet and Greet Other Skiers
Meeting new people is always a fun part of vacation, and that is incorporated at the very beginning of the celebration. Come to the Village Haus from 3 to 5 p.m. for live music, cookies, cocoa, and great conversation.

Feast on King’s Cake
King’s Cake is a Mardi Gras tradition dating back to the middle ages. Currently, it’s made of sweet dough, covered in frosting, and typically decorated in purple, green and gold. You can take part in a King’s Cake Pancake Breakfast at The Village Haus from 8 to 10 a.m. on Feb. 25. The only cost to you is $12 at the door!

Fiesta with a Singer from The Voice
Music is a lively part of the Mardi Gras tradition, and you can enjoy music in Angel Fire with a contestant from The Voice, Gyth Rigdon! (See him performing in the 2019 finale here.) The concert takes place 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Angel Fire Community Center. Learn more and purchase tickets here.

For a full list of Hal’s Pals Fat Tuesday activities with dates, times and locations, click here.

Red River

Red River has been celebrating Mardi Gras since 1992, said Shelby Werley, Executive Director of the Red River Chamber of Commerce, and this year promises even more fun for the community and visitors.

“We’ve pulled different traditions from different places in the world and combined them all to create what is Mardi Gras in the mountains in Red River,” Werley said. “It’s a really fun and unique event.”

Keep reading to learn more about some of the highlights and favorites!

Burn the Tchoupitoulas
Kick of the Fat Tuesday celebration at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Motherlode Saloon with a walk down Main Street leading to a massive bonfire. The flames engulf the Tchoupitoulas, which is a fictional character representing the celebration. While there, you can write down your worries and throw them into the fire. It might not be January, but it’s a perfect time for a new start!

Watch the Parade
Werley cited the parade Saturday morning as a local favorite. Businesses and individuals participate in the parade with beautiful floats and throw candy and beads to onlookers. It begins at 4 p.m. on Main Street and is the perfect chance to get out before one of the nightly balls.

Dance the Night Away
“Every night we have a ball that is hosted at a different location, and then we also have a Cajun band that plays,” Werley said. For a full list of locations and times, you can visit the Red River Chamber of Commerce Mardi Gras in the Mountain page.Wherever you decide to celebrate, we hope you have a fun and safe time! Be sure to capture your memories and share them with the hashtag #skinewmexico. We can’t wait to see all the fun you have with friends and family alike.

Prepare Your Car for Your Ski Trip in 9 Simple Steps

Jan 22, 2020 by Kelsie Stelting

Preparing for a skiing or snowboarding trip is about more than packing up your bags with weather appropriate clothing and extra snacks and hitting the road with your phone’s GPS. Your car also requires a decent amount of preparation to ensure your time on the road is as safe as possible. If you’re driving from an area where you don’t encounter steep slopes, snow or ice as frequently, you’ll have additional considerations that you may not have thought of before. Use these steps to be sure that your vehicle is road-trip-ready in time for your vacation.

1. Check your tires (including your spare).

When driving in the mountains, the condition of your tires is critical. Before going on a trip, check the tread, making sure there aren’t any slow leaks or cracks in the rubber. Use a tire pressure gauge to ensure all of the tires are equally filled to manufacturer-recommended levels. This will help with your gas mileage, as well as ensure you have as much traction as possible when you drive on steep inclines or if the road gets slick. Having a spare is essential on any trip, but especially on a trip to the mountains. There may hours between towns, or even encountering another vehicle. Have a spare ready and available, in case the tire goes flat while you’re driving. This will save a lot of headaches later on. Keep in mind some newer vehicles do not come with a spare tire, so speak with your local tire shop about having a spare or extra tire prepared for your vehicle if you do not already have one.

2. Check your breaks.

While it’s important to avoid over-braking on downhill slopes, you also need to be sure that your brake pads have plenty of life left in them. As you’re driving down the mountain, you may need to downshift and tap on your brakes every so often to keep from speeding. Another consideration is wildlife. Many animals cross the road throughout the day and during the night, and you want to be able to stop as quickly as possible to avoid an accident.

3. Check your oil.

It’s always a good rule of thumb to check your oil before a major road trip. Change or oil if it’s getting close to time, or at least top it off if needed. Driving in the mountains can put additional strain on your engine, so treat it well and extend its life by keeping the oil fresh and full.

4. Check your lights.

Visibility in the mountains, especially when it’s precipitating, is a major safety factor. Check that each of your lights is functioning, including your fog lights, which you may not need often where you live. Have a friend or family member check your brake lights while you are tapping on them, as well as your turn signals.

5. Top off your fluids.

Check your windshield wiper fluid, antifreeze, transmission fluid, and gas before beginning your trip. If you’ve mapped out your course and have determined that the gas stations are too far apart to account for detours or scenic routes, you may want to pack an extra gas can, just in case.

6. Pack these essentials.

In addition to the items you’ll need for your trip, you will also want to load your vehicle with each of these necessities.

  • An emergency kit including a First-aid kit, flares, jumper cables, a flashlight, a blanket, an AM/FM radio, bottled water and non-perishable snacks, and any items you may need in an emergency, like medications.
  • Your cell phone and charger
  • Some extra cash in case your card is frozen for any reason or you patronize a business that does not accept cards or checks
  • Plenty of snacks and drinking water
  • Extra blankets
  • Non-clumping kitty litter and a shovel in case you get stuck
  • Warm winter clothes you can put on if you need to go outside and change a tire or dig out of a snowbank
  • Ice scraper
  • Tire chains

7. Map your trip.

Cell coverage can be patchy in the mountains, so you’ll want to have a map of your course–or at least a state map–printed out or purchased ahead of time. If you’ve only driven the route a couple of times, or are brand new to the area, you’ll want to have a good idea of how to get to your destination in case your phone dies or you’re left without service. This is also a good idea in case a detour comes up, so you’ll have a general understanding of the area.

Bonus Tip: Check the Weather and Plan Accordingly

As always, when you’re going on a road trip, it’s important to check the weather ahead of time. You’ll want to know when and where you may encounter inclement weather. Consider a back-up plan, in case the roads are too slick to drive, or adjust what you are bringing if you think you may be snowed in longer than expected.

We hope that you enjoy the mountains this ski season, but as always, safety comes first. Use these tips to make sure the most memorable part of your trip to the mountains is the great skiing you’ll find in New Mexico and fun time spent with family.

10 Reasons to Take Lessons During Learn to Ski Month

Jan 8, 2020 by Kelsie Stelting

January is Learn to Ski Month, and there’s never been a better time to head to the mountains in New Mexico and take a lesson! (Children 6-12 learn for only $50 a day in January!) Whether you’re new to the sport or have been practicing for years, taking a lesson by a trained instructor can help you improve and have more fun on the slopes.

We reached out to Stephen Trask, a ski instructor at Ski Santa Fe, who has taught hundreds of students the basics of skiing as well as advanced skills. When you spend the majority of your career on the slopes, working with people of all skill levels, you get an idea of what works and what doesn’t. Here are some reasons Trask says you should learn to ski this month:

It’s inexpensive!

“With beginner lesson packages costing only a little more than getting a lift ticket and rentals separately, it is great value,” Trask says.

The KOAT program in New Mexico allows children 6 to 12 years old to have lessons, rentals, and lift tickets for $50 per day at participating resorts! This is a great way to get a taste for the sport and try it out as a family. If you decide you like it, you can always go another day or even plan for a season pass in coming years.

You can learn at almost any age.

Depending on the resort and lesson availability, children can start learning to ski as young as three years old. First-time skiers may have the most to gain from lessons, as they can quickly learn the foundational skills required and continue to build upon them. If you are starting your children young, Trask says patience is key.

“Take it slow to begin with,” Trask says. “Try a half-day or even just an hour. A positive experience is key. And be aware that learning will take time at this age, there is no need to rush the process.”

Some parents may prefer to teach their children themselves, but Trask says it doesn’t need to be an either/or solution.

“It is well worth starting out with some time on snow with your child so they get used to the environment and even a little sliding around,” Trask says. “Lessons can be key to getting your child to progress. Having someone teach your child good technique from a young age will set them up for success.”

Skiing is a great workout.

While skiing is a fun way to pass the time outside, it also burns a considerable amount of calories! An hour spend downhill skiing or snowboarding could burn as many as 300 to 600 calories, as compared to 292 biking.

As you’re skiing, you work many main muscle groups. Your quads help support you and guide the skis. As you’re bending, you use foot and calf muscles. Your core stabilizes you to prevent you from falling, and if you ski with poles, your arms get a great workout as well. Not to mention, walking to and from the lifts and lodge!

You can take it at your own pace.

Although your first instinct may be to fit as much as you can into your lesson, remember, no two people learn at the same pace. Depending on your fitness, interest, and many other factors, you may want to take your lesson at a faster or slower pace. That’s okay.

“Remember that the experience should be fun, it isn’t all about becoming as good as you can as quickly as possible,” Trask says. “Everyone learns at different speeds, and quite often the student that takes longer to learn to ski/snowboard ends up being the best.”

Your family could bond through the experience.

Traveling to New Mexico and learning to ski could be an incredible bonding experience. While there are plenty of fun off-mountain activities for the entire family, learning a new skill together can be a memory you recall for years to come and something that brings you together for trips and holidays even after the children are out of the house.

For example, this family made countless memories with a road trip, ski lessons, tubing, and the torchlight parade in Red River.

Learn stress-free from professionals.

Many people are tempted to save money by learning from a friend or significant other. Keep in mind instructors are trained to teach lessons and have plenty of practice doing so. They can help you stay safe, learn new skills, and be more patient than a loved one might.

“If you want a positive experience rather than having your significant other, shouting, ‘Just turn!’ as you are going 30mph toward a tree, take a lesson,” Trask says.

You’ll set a strong foundation to build on.

When you learn to walk, you don’t start out in the middle of the floor putting one foot in front of the other. You first learn to hold your head up, then roll over, sit up, crawl, hold yourself up, and eventually take tentative steps before you’re fully confident. Skiing is the same way. You need to learn basic skills, like how to slow down and turn at a slow pace before you’ll be ready to ride the lift and head down a complete trail. Once you have a strong foundation built, you can start working toward bigger challenges like harder trail difficulties or attempting tricks for the first time.

“Whether it is a tiny step towards a goal or a big one, we are here to help you through the learning process,” Trask says.

You can choose a lesson type that meets your needs and preferences.

The option to choose between group and private lessons is an appealing one. If you’re one of the many adults who has a fear of failure or don’t want to move at the pace of a group, signing up for a private lesson could be the right move. You’ll also receive more individualized attention and guidance.

“Group lessons are a good idea because of value, as well as the opportunity to learn with friends and meet new people,” Trask says. “With a group lesson, try finding quieter times of the season and you can end up in a small class anyway.”

You’ll be safer.

In addition to eating and resting well before a lesson, understanding safe practices, and wearing good protective gear, it is important to be as safe as possible while skiing and snowboarding. Reading up on how to prevent common injuries beforehand can help make your time safer, as well as learning from a professional who can teach you in a controlled, safe environment.

“Instructors have an understanding of how the body and the skis/snowboard work together,” Trask says. “Taking you through the basics step by step, building on what you learn, helping to correct inefficiencies and making your experience a positive one is why instructors exist.”

Another tip, in addition to learning from a skilled professional, is to relax while practicing. Trask suggests those who are nervous focus on their breathing or sing a song in their heads to have a more enjoyable time.

It’s fun!

There’s a reason millions of people pack up and hit the slopes each year. It’s not for the car ride (although, you can see a lot of sights on the way) or to watch the funny way people walk in ski boots. It’s because skiing is a great way to have fun outdoors and spend time with friends and family.

“It’s like being a kid again,” Trask says. “Skiing is play. Plus you are in a beautiful environment and getting some great exercise!”

We hope you will join us on the slopes this January for a great time skiing and learning. As you’re planning your trip, Trask has a few tips to set you up for success.

“There is a lot to learning to ski or snowboard, some basics can really help,” Trask says. “Factor in plenty of time to get ready and organized for your day on the slopes. Be fed and hydrated, make sure you have clothing/gear for a cold-weather environment as well as sunscreen. But most importantly of all have fun!”

Best Times to Go Skiing

Dec 30, 2019 by Kelsie Stelting

With the ski season often lasting from early November to late March or early April, there’s a decent window for you to plan your trip. In addition to planning on certain months, there may be specific days that lend themselves to a better time, depending on your personality, family, and what you’re looking for out of the trip. Keep reading to see your options and evaluate which one would be best for you.

Early Season

Pros: discounts, less crowded

Cons: fewer runs may be open

The main benefit of going during the early season is saving with early season discounts while hitting the slopes while most people haven’t even begun planning their vacations. You’ll be able to spread out, relax, and enjoy yourself without waiting on lift lines or for other snowboarders to get started down the mountain to take your turn. If you choose to take lessons, you may also be able to get into a smaller group session and have more individualized instruction from the teacher! Some ski areas may have less snow during this time and subsequently have fewer runs open, but with snowmaking technologies constantly improving and areas adding more snowmakers, this is becoming less and less of an issue.

Holidays

Pros: fun family events

Cons: more crowded

The holidays are a beautiful time to spend in the mountains. You can practically guarantee a white Christmas, especially if you spend it on the slopes! In Christmases past, New Mexico ski areas have hosted torchlight parades, skiing with Santa, cookie decorating events, and more. Equally as exciting is New Year’s Eve, where you can ring in the new year with fun activities and skiing or snowboarding! Some areas have special viewing events to watch the ball drop and more fun events. You may have difficulties traveling long distances over the holidays with stores being closed or lodging options being full. Planning ahead is a must to make a holiday ski vacation successful!

Deal Days

Pros: deep discounts

Cons: deals may sell out, might be crowded

Several New Mexico ski areas have yearly periods when you can ski for free or at discounted rates. For example, Red River Ski Area has deal days set aside for specific times, and you can save up to fifty percent or more on lift tickets! Be sure to check out our yearly deals posts (like this one) and sign up for our snow report on the bottom of the page to get updates on available discounts. You really can’t go wrong with grabbing some extra savings, especially if you have a family or want to go multiple times during the year! You may find some package deals, like these, sell out quickly, so be sure to book your tickets early to ensure your savings!

Weekends

Pros: More events

Cons: More crowded

Many people choose to ski over the weekend to save their PTO days and skip taking their children out of school. This is a great option, especially since many ski areas reserve events like torchlight parades or night skiing for the weekends. As with many popular times to ski, you may see larger crowds on the slopes, meaning longer wait times at the lifts and more people grabbing for rooms in the lodges. Unless you go in the early season or you can get discounts for your age, occupation, or military status, there are also typically less savings to be had on the weekends.

Weekdays

Pros: Less crowded, more discount options

Cons: Might need to take PTO, fewer events

Weekdays are an especially appealing time to go skiing for those who are going for their first time or those looking to ski on a discount. Since most people are working or in school, you’ll likely have more space and fewer skiers to navigate around. Enjoy shorter lift lines, shorter wait times at the on-mountain restaurants and bars, and more opportunities for savings. As a bonus, if you take ski or snowboard lessons during this time, you may find the group lessons are less full, leaving you more time to ask questions of the instructor and focus on your unique needs. Of course, you’ll need to take time off work or school if your schedule doesn’t leave you weekdays free, but we’re sure it will be well worth it!

Spring Break

Pros: extra events

Cons: more crowded

While you may associate spring break with beaches and beverages, it is also a popular time to hit the slopes. There are plenty of options to enjoy yourself and save, both on the mountain and off the mountain. Plus, you’ll be able to take time off without worrying about missing classes or finals and take your children without them missing important information. The atmosphere on the mountain is laidback and fun, with many young people and families traveling in groups. This is another time to plan ahead and save your lodging and tickets ahead of time to make checking in and getting on the mountain easy with the extra influx of skiers and snowboarders.

Late Season

Pros: extra savings and pond skimming events

Cons: fewer runs open, harder to plan

If the holidays are an extra busy time for you and you find yourself more available in March and April, skiing in the late season may be the perfect choice for you. As with the early season, you’ll likely find extra limited-time offers and fewer crowds. You’ll also be able to take in the great tradition of pond skimming, where people ski down the mountain and then ski over a pond of water. This is always a fun time to celebrate the season and maybe even win a few prizes. However, with the season depending on snowfall and cool temperatures, there may be fewer runs open. Ski areas may need to close earlier than anticipated or may stay open longer. Skiing during this time of year requires some flexibility in travel.

Whenever you decide to ski in New Mexico, we are sure you’ll find great service, high quality trails, and plenty of fun, no matter your age or ability. Start planning your trip today with our packing list and get ready to have a great time!

Knee injuries are some of the most commonly talked about ski injuries. These can include tears to the ligaments or tissues in the knee, such as the meniscus, ACL, LCL, MCL, or PCL.  Often happening while bending, twisting, or turning, these can be both painful and ultimately costly if extensive physical therapy or surgery is required. On the bright side, these types of injuries can be prevented by knowing your limits by avoiding excessive fatigue (see our point below) and training the appropriate muscle groups.

Strengthening glutes and hamstrings is particularly important in providing additional stability to the knee joint. Flexibility in these muscles is also important so you can withstand falls and twists more easily. Adding in core work can help with your stability as well, making these falls less likely.

Strengthen This Part of Your Body

Have you ever heard of–or experienced yourself–achilles ruptures, tibial fractures, or ankle injuries? They can be painful and long-lasting, especially ankle sprains, without much hope for a full, pain-free recovery. The best course of action with these types of injuries is to prevent them!

The first step you can take is to check your binding settings. Make sure they are set right for you. Once you’re sure they’re set appropriately, check them again. This is one of the simplest ways you can prevent lower leg injuries! The next step you need to take is strengthening your lower leg, including your calves, ankles, and feet!

Drop Your Poles

Skiers who fall with their thumbs out, often suffer an ailment called skiers thumb. This is when the ligament in your thumb, which are important for your gripping action, is injured. Sometimes this can result in temporary pain, long lasting arthritis, or something that needs to be surgically repaired. The easiest way to prevent this injury is by dropping your poles in the fall. This will help keep you from falling with your thumbs out. Other ways you can prevent upper extremity injuries is by improving core strength to prevent falls and practicing falling techniques because let’s face it, falling is a part of the sport!

Practice Falling

Because falling is inevitable when you’re challenging yourself and working with mother nature, practicing falling at slower speeds and leveler inclines is a great strategy to prevent injuries. Some of the ways you can make your spills safer include relaxing, not digging in your edges, aiming your feet downhill, and not putting your arm out to break the fall.

Wear Protective Gear

Many risks you take while skiing are simply associated with being outdoors. Use our packing list to make sure you’ve covered all your bases when prepping for your trip. As a general rule, you need to make sure you have – or can get access to – these items:

  • Helmet
  • Waterproof clothing
  • Waterproof gloves
  • Multiple layers of moisture-wicking clothing
  • Sunscreen
  • Chapstick
  • UV protected goggles or sunglasses
  • Microfiber lens wipe
  • Hand and toe warmers

Some skiers might also opt to wear additional protective gear, such as back pads, supportive knee or wrist braces, and padded shorts.

Know Your Limits

Ultimately, many ski injuries can be prevented by knowing your limits. If you know you’re typically wiped after only a few hours of skiing, try saving money on a half-day lift ticket or build in a long midday break. Avoid taking the more challenging trails until you’ve mastered the blues and greens. If you’re just a beginner, try starting out without the ski poles so you don’t have them in the way as you fall and find your footing.

Our goal is to keep you skiing for as long as possible by staying injury-free. (Plus, you’ll be able to look forward to the free lift tickets for super seniors as one way you can save by skiing in New Mexico!) Be sure to keep leveling up in your ski practice by using the tips above, taking lessons from trained instructors, and following blogs like ours that will keep you updated with the latest news. If you do, you are bound to learn, grow, and enjoy skiing even more!

New This Season with Ski New Mexico

Nov 25, 2019 by Kelsie Stelting

The days are getting shorter and the snow is falling, and we all know that means ski season is here! We’ve been waiting all year for snow to pour back on the mountains so we can get our skis and boards out and hit the slopes. Our favorite ski areas have been hard at work to make sure that when our skis first hit the powder, we’ll have an enjoyable time. Here are some of the updates that have been made at resorts across New Mexico!

Ski Santa Fe

We know you love spending a day or weekend at Ski Santa Fe, and they want to make sure your favorite runs are operational as much as possible. This year, they’ve added snowmaking capabilities to Gayway and Upper Gayway, meaning you’ll have a smoother ride regardless of the actual snowfall this year. While you’re at it, cruise by Totomoff’s Bar, which you can find mid-mountain. They have also added a tram car for expanded beverage service! We’re never ones to turn down a beverage after a long day skiing or even a quick pit stop mid-run to fuel up! Be sure to grab a drink and spend some great time at Ski Santa Fe with friends.

Taos Ski Valley

Last year, we announced direct flights through Taos Air from Dallas. This year, you can enjoy direct access from your favorite resort to and from Carlsbad-San Diego and Hawthorne-Los Angeles, CA. As an added bonus, you get to fly on a less crowded plane with two free bags (perfect for all your extra gear) and free ski and board rentals at Taos Ski Valley! From the airport, you can easily rent a car of your own or use the ground shuttle in Taos to make it where you need to go.

Sipapu

This year, Camp Bigfoot is changing the game for youth learning to ski. During this progressive ski or ride program, children ages 5 to 12 will participate in four sessions which will provide the best introduction to snow sliding and skill development. A main goal of the program is to spark a passion for snowsports and the mountains in a fun and safe environment. Sipapu regulars can also look forward to continued sales and family-friendly events throughout the season.

Pajarito

If you love having a variety of runs with amazing views, Pajarito is a must-see. Children 10 and younger ski free all season long, perfect for large families. With its snowmaking capabilities, people of all ages can enjoy affordable lift tickets, fun events, and special promotions throughout the season.

Sandia Peak

Enjoy a delicious meal at 10,300 ft. above sea level at Ten 3, a new restaurant now open at the top of the Sandia Peak. The menu has a variety of options, all made from scratch by distinguished chef, J. Steve Brockman. Make a special occasion to dine at Ten 3, or stop by while skiing, for a great meal and drinks at the mountaintop!

Red River Ski and Summer Area

If Red River is your favorite small town in New Mexico, you are going to love the new snowmaking and grooming improvements this year. In addition to the changes made to their snowmaking systems, they have added a new PistenBully 600 Winch groomer, sure to make your time on the slopes even better. Be sure to check their deals and discounts page for special offers throughout the year.

Ski Apache

Ski Apache is best known for its mild winter temperatures and abundance of blue-bird skiing. The mountain’s high elevations, combined with its southerly latitude, gives the resort a unique advantage of seeing abundant snowfall but comfortable weather. This season, Ski Apache is offering three different Stay and Play packages that include hotel accommodations, lift tickets and more with prices starting at $599. Visit www.SkiApache.com for complete package details and how to book your stay.

Ski NM Annual Pond Skimming Events

Mar 21, 2019 by Kelsie Stelting

The rules are simple: get down the slope as quickly as you can and preferably in the wackiest costume you can find, then do your best to sustain both verticality and forward momentum as you glide or skim across the surface of an ice-cold body of water.

Make it all the way across, and glory will be yours as you bask in the roars of the appreciative crowd. Fail to get enough speed, mistime your jump, or get slightly out of balance and there will be no mistaking the chill of failure.  Either way, showmanship is key. The crowd can often determine your fate and sway the judges’ decisions in your favor. Do something truly unique and even a splashdown could be rewarded with victory!

Whether you’re going for ultimate glory as a competitor or choose to be a warmer, drier spectator, there’s nothing like the fun of pond skimming or enjoying one of those amazing bluebird days in New Mexico.

Pond Skim Events

Sipapu Ski & Summer Area – March 23

Skiers and boarders test their balance and bravery—and try to stay dry—as they race down the mountain and attempt to “skim” across lake Sipapu. Prizes awarded to the best finishers, including a Never Summer snowboard and Praxis skis, both featuring a colorful and awesome Sierra Nevada design.

Details

Red River Ski & Summer Area – March 24

Join Red River Ski & Summer Area as they send off the ski season with their annual Pond Skim, an event you won’t want to miss!

Details

Taos Ski Valley – April 7

Celebrate the end of the season by laughing until your sides hurt at this must see event. Competitors will use any means necessary to skim across a pool of ice cold water (best costume earns points). Each competitor will get two chances to show off their skills with plenty of opportunities to win prizes from Sierra Nevada, Never Summer, Smith and more.

Details

Ski Santa Fe – April 13

Ski Santa Fe presents Slush Cup 2019 on Saturday, April 13! Test your Pond Skimming skills from noon – 3pm at Totemoff’s or just join us for the show with live music. Costumes are encouraged and registration is free. The “Winner” will receive a special Slush Cup Trophy. 4 Reasons to Use On Mountain Childcare

Mar 15, 2019 by Kelsie Stelting

Family vacations are often yearly highlights. There’s nothing like getting time to unwind, relax, and have fun together away from the daily grind of work, school, and so on. But sometimes, vacationing with children can be a struggle! Next time you go skiing, you might consider leaving your children in one of the resort child care centers. Here’s why.

  1. They’re safe.

Let’s face it. Leaving your children with someone you don’t know is scary! Luckily, the employees at the centers are trained to care for children just like yours, they’re in a public place, and there are security systems in place to make sure you’re the only one who can pick up your child.

  1. They’re close by.

If you’re nervous about leaving your child in a daycare center, it’s nice to know you can pop in at any time to see how they’re doing. If you need a break, want to grab a snack, or just want to check in, it’s easy to do so when the childcare center is right by the slopes.

  1. They’ll have fun.

Each ski area invests in the childcare center and in their employees to make sure day care is a fun experience for each child. Oftentimes, they’ll even take your little outside to play in the snow so they can learn to love the mountains as much as you do!

  1. You’ll be able to spend time on the mountain.

No more taking turns hanging out with the baby or forgoing skiing altogether. Taking advantage of the lodge childcare center means you can hit the slopes knowing that your child is safe, close by, and having fun.

If you’re planning a trip to a New Mexico ski area, be sure to call ahead and save a spot for your child. They often fill up quickly, especially on the weekends or holidays. Get ready to have a great vacation!

5 Reasons to Take A Private Lesson

Mar 7, 2019 by Kelsie Stelting

If you’re planning your next trip to the mountains and trying to decide between a private or group lesson, here are some reasons you might go with the former.

1. Get individualized attention

Nothing can replace the value of one-on-one attention from an expert trained to instruct you in skiing or snowboarding. When you take a private lesson, you get all of their knowledge to yourself or your small group, meaning you can work on exactly what you need to, instead of trying to keep up with everyone else.

2. Get to know your instructor

Instructors come to New Mexico from all over the world. They might be there to teach you new skills, but a one-on-one lesson could give the space to get to know someone new and learn how they became so good at the sport!

3. You can spend time with your loved ones

Private lessons are not just for one person, at most areas you can add on as many people as you would like which also brings the cost down.  If you want to take a private lesson with your spouse or family members, it’s a great bonding experience. With the instructor and two of you, a lesson can become a great family activity and you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime.

4. Skip the lift lines

Who doesn’t hate waiting in line? Most ski areas let instructors conducting private lessons and students skip the lift lines. That means you get prime access to all the ski area has to offer. Plus, less time in line means more time practicing your new skills!

5. You’ll get better, faster

Sure, you could spend a day or two on the slopes trying to teach yourself what to do, but if you’re serious about improving, a private lesson is the way to go. You’ll be taught by a trained expert, observed for improvement, and then coached accordingly. Save your time (and your body) and reserve a private lesson!

So go ahead and book your private lesson today. You’ll quickly learn why so many people opt for the individualized attention and smaller groups. Get ready to enjoy your new skills on the slopes!

Our First Family Vacation in Red River, NM

Mar 1, 2019 by Kelsie Stelting

Red River, N.M., will always hold a special place in my family’s heart. It’s where I got my first snowboard lessons as an adult, it’s where I perfected my “falling leaf,” it’s where I waited out a snowstorm at the only hotel in town with a generator, and now, it’s where I took my children for our first family vacation.

My husband and I made the decision to become foster parents in August, and six months later, we were blessed with two beautiful boys to welcome into our family. As first-time parents, we were thrilled, excited, nervous, and overly prepared. (Don’t ask me about how many toys we have in our house, or the giant box of extra clothes in the closet.)

One of the first things we wanted to do with them was take them on a family vacation to experience the mountains, skiing, the torchlight parade, and the joy of a long road trip. So, we got our approval from DHS, asked our parent friends for some pointers, packed up the car, and hit the road.

New Mexico is the ideal place to enjoy the mountains due to the ease of getting there. From Oklahoma City, we had an easy drive on I-40 most of the way. As a plus, we had cell service most of the way, so we never lost our directions getting there. We had plenty of places to stop and use the bathroom, and even grab a few treats. Between the snacks, naps, some shameless screen time, and plenty of bathroom breaks, we made it to Red River, ready to enjoy our first trip as a family.

The first thing we did in the morning (aside from eating!) was get our rentals. We rented from Sitzmark. The second we walked in the door, we felt welcome. My husband and the four-year-old were both new to snow sports, so they had someone to walk them through finding the perfect fit, how to put on the boots, and picking out a good board. Plus, they had helmet rentals to keep the four-year-old safe, and a supply of last-minute needs. (Read: Goggles for my husband who forgot his at home.)

One neat thing the Sitzmark offers is rental delivery. You can fill out your information ahead of time, and then your rentals get delivered right to your door. We’ll definitely be taking advantage of this service on our next trips, especially now that we know the ropes.

With all of our gear, we headed out to the mountains, dropped the one-year-old off at the daycare, picked up our lift tickets from guest services, and brought our four-year-old to his lesson. Something we’re always concerned about as foster parents is daycare security, but we were provided with a “receipt” that we would need to show to pick up either child. That made me feel a little better that they would be secure until we could pick them up!

After the children began their day, my husband and I went to begin our private lesson. I’ll share more about private lessons (and why you should try one!) in another post, but it was amazing. First of all, as new parents, riding up the lifts together felt like a mini-date! Secondly, it was nice to work in a smaller group setting with someone I felt comfortable failing in front of. We encouraged each other, laughed at each other, and enjoyed the bonding experience.

With our lesson behind us, the one-year-old in daycare, and the four-year-old in lessons, we had the day to spend as we wished! Since lessons take place right on the main slope, we were able to watch our son make some trips down the bunny slope and ride back up the red carpet. Then, we walked over and grabbed lunch at the lodge and relaxed together.

http://skinewmexico.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Skilessons.mp4

Finally, it was time for us to practice what we learned in our lesson! We rode up and down the mountain, took a few spills, and enjoyed being outside. Our four-year-old loved being on the mountains and skiing. The instructors at Red River were great about teaching him the basics in words that he could understand and remember. (Now that we’re back home, he tells everyone he learned to ski “without the sticks!”)

When all was said and done, our little family was ready for a nice long nap and a good meal. Fresh and revitalized, we tried one of the most fun activities of the weekend: tubing. If you haven’t yet, check out this article I wrote about our experience. It is at the top of my must-do list for a trip to the mountains!

Right after that is the torchlight parade. I had seen it before, but watching it through my children’s eyes topped that experience by a million. I loved answering his questions about why the people were carrying fire and what colors the fireworks were. Plus, hot chocolate from The Blake was a huge hit.

As you can imagine, we were ready for bed! We slept long and hard and were ready to get back at it the next day. My husband and I took turns with the children, and when it came my turn to snowboard, I was determined to level up. I’ve always struggled with my toeside turns, but something from my lesson finally clicked. I made three runs down the mountain, and FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, got my toeside turns. Can you hear me squealing? Because I am.

Like most vacations do, ours ended way too soon. We packed up the car, loaded up the boys, chugged some coffee, and started the trip home. Luckily, we were able to bring some new memories with us.

MUST DO Family Activity

Feb 20, 2019 by Kelsie Stelting

A highlight of my winter was taking my family on vacation to Red River, New Mexico. My husband and I were eager to snowboard, for our son to try skiing for the first time, and to have a little bonding with our one-year-old! One of our favorite parts of the entire trip was going tubing! Here are a few reasons why you should try it too:

1. The entire family can get involved

Trying to plan activities for people of all ages can be difficult, but I’m happy to say we managed it with tubing. We bundled up the children, went to the mountain, and rented a couple of tubes. While my husband or I held the one-year-old, the other one went down the hill with the four-year-old! It was a perfect time for all of us to be out and about.

2. Tubing could be a more economical option

Let’s be honest: taking a family of four (or more) skiing can get pricey. If you’re wanting to get on the slopes but aren’t ready to pay for lift tickets, rentals, lessons, and more, tubing is a great alternative. At Red River, it only costs $20 to rent a tube, and you can share it with the entire crew!

3. Less time commitment

At Red River, tubing sessions last an hour. It was simple to feed the children, load them up, get on the slopes, have some fun, and then head to other events. (We decided to watch the Torchlight Parade right afterward!)

4. It’s fun!

Like I mentioned earlier, tubing was so much fun, for all of us. Our four-year-old happily told his grandparents about tubing (“not sledding”) afterward and what a great time he had.

If you’re looking for an activity the entire family can enjoy for minimal expense, try renting a tube and watch just how much fun you’ll have!

El Nino in Full Effect

Dec 13, 2018 by Kelsie Stelting

At the beginning of the season, we wrote about all the things we are excited about, including some improvements at the ski areas and the expected El Nino winter. An El Nino prediction bodes well for skiers because it means more snow!

New Mexico ski areas are already seeing increased snowfall. According to an article in Albuquerque Business First, Ski Santa Fe has already received 85 percent of its 2017 snowfall. Similarly, Angel Fire Resort has seen 60 percent of last year’s snowfall.

Not only does this mean better conditions for a day on the slope, but the added precipitation benefits the areas as well with extra tourism. When the resorts can stay open longer, the surrounding towns can continue to benefit from tourism. Dash Hegemen with Taos Ski Valley reported the resort saw a 300 percent increase in visitations over the previous year!

With all the hype surrounding this year’s season and increased snowfall, it’s more important than ever to book ahead for important dates! Whether you’re planning a big family vacation or trying to get in some skiing on a holiday weekend, make sure your travel and accommodations are booked in advance.

Ski New Mexico provides an up-to-date snow report on the website, sharing information about the base, number of runs open, weather, and more. With the extra snowfall, bases are ranging from 15 inches at Pajarito Mountain to 35 inches at Taos Ski Valley.

Keep checking the snow report and sign up for our email newsletter to get updated information about the cumulative snowfall and other conditions.

6 Reasons Why We Love Snowboarding

Mar 13, 2017 by Kelsie Stelting

“Snowboards are not just pieces of wood, steel, and fiberglass. They are tools of escape. A medium for personal expression. A way to challenge fears, push limits, and share incredible experiences with your friends.” Shred Stuff

There are a lot of reasons why I think snowboarding is one of the best ways to spend a winter vacation, but, since you probably don’t want me to ramble on like Shakespeare about powder and mountains, I made this list.

Winter Sport

Ah, winter, what a lovely time of year, when walking down the sidewalk could be considered an extreme sport. When the snow starts falling, I know I can say goodbye to long strolls in the park, outdoor basketball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, or basically any great exercise that doesn’t require a gym membership or shoveling snow. Riding a snowboard surrounded by mountain views beats both of those 100% of the time.

Beautiful Scenery

Since snowboarding requires a mountain and snow, you can guarantee that anywhere you go, you are going to have a great view and fresh air. Being in the mountains is not just beautiful, but it’s good for you. Research indicates spending time in nature is a mood booster. Combine that with exercise, and you’ve got a recipe for a great day.

Challenge

Johnny Depp said, “I like the challenge of trying different things and wondering whether it’s going to work or whether I’m going to fall flat on my face.” I’d bet Captain Jack Sparrow a chest of pirate gold that he would love snowboarding just like I do. Trying new things and challenging yourself is essential to growing as a person, and whether you’re a beginner like me or an Olympic athlete, there’s always a challenge when it comes to snowboarding.

Group or Solo Sport

Snowboarding is one of the best ways to spend a family vacation. You can go out as a group and enjoy the day together, or, if someone is tired or wants to try other trails, you can just as easily go out on your own and reconvene in the evening. Bonus: when you’re all sitting around the fire after a long day of snowboarding, you can talk about all of your adventures out on the trail!

Beginner or Expert

Sometimes, sports are only fun when you’ve reached a level of mastery, especially when going out as a group. Snowboarding is great in the fact that it can scale. New to the sport? Do your “falling leaf” down a green trail. Old hand? Shred some of the blue or black trails for a more appropriate level! Either way, you’re still snowboarding, you’re still outside, and you’re still getting great exercise.

What are some reasons why you love snowboarding? Comment below and let us know!

Torchlight Parades

Mar 6, 2017 by Kelsie Stelting

Every Saturday night at Red River Ski & Summer Area people gather to watch the torchlight parade. Here’s what you need to know before you go.

Logistics

From a distance, the torchlight parade looks like people waving lights down a mountain. Up close, it’s much more than that. Area skiers and snowboarders hold onto actual balls of fire, and, in an extreme act of coordination, wave them around while sliding down the mountain—at night. If nothing else, it’s good to go just to marvel at/be jealous of their talent.

Location

People gather at Lift House Bar & Grill to watch the torchlight parade. True to Red River style, there’s something there for the entire family; grab a hot cocoa or adult beverage to warm up during the show.

Planning

There is plenty of room for everyone on either the upper deck or lower patio, but to get a front-row view, arrive a little early. Be sure to dress warmly and bring a blanket if you need it. Don’t forget your phone or camera to take pictures – it goes by fast!

3 Reasons We Love Ski Apache

Feb 27, 2017 by Kelsie Stelting

When we think of Ski Apache, we think about amazing trails, stunning views, and an incredible skiing experience. With 55 trails, 11 lifts, a snow-making operation, and more than 750 skiable acres, Ski Apache makes skiing in New Mexico even sweeter. Here are a few of our favorite things about Ski Apache.

The Apache Bowl

The Apache Bowl is one of the most popular runs at Ski Apache. With a wide path and stunning mountain views from 11,000 feet above sea level, the Apache Bowl is breathtaking in more ways than one.

The Gondola

The only gondola at a New Mexico ski resort is right in Ruidoso’s back yard. The 12-minute gondola ride sweeps guests up to the top of Sierra Blanca at 11,500 feet elevation! From the peak, you can see amazing views, get a drink at the Yurt, or follow one of the many trails down the mountain and do it all over again!

Beginner Friendly

Ski Apache is known for being a great place for beginner skiers and snowboarders. Not only are 80% of the trails beginner or intermediate, but Ski Apache is running a discount too good to miss. Get a free lift ticket with the purchase of a beginner group lesson at Ski Apache!

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a coat, grab a friend, and hit the slopes. And when you’re done, let us know what you love about Ski Apache!

3 Reasons We Love Pajarito

Feb 6, 2017 by Kelsie Stelting

Pajarito Mountain, located in the Jemez Mountains, it’s the ideal location for people looking to get away from the crowds and get great views of New Mexico. With 300 acres of cleared, skiable terrain, dedicated snowmaking, and a great selection of discounts and promotions, it is not only a great place to ski or snowboard, but also an affordable destination for snowsports enthusiasts. In case you needed any extra reasons, here are three things we love about Pajarito Mountain.

No Lift Lines

Pajarito Mountain is famous for its lack of lift lines. Standing in lines or navigating around other boarders or skiers can get old really quickly. Avoid this at Pajarito and spend more time doing what you went there to do!

Snowmaking

A lack of snow can really put a damper on a skiing or snowboarding trip. The snowmaking operation at Pajarito has taken the guessing out of the trip, and allowed people to enjoy the slopes all season long!

Panoramic Views

With a peak elevation of 10,440 feet, Pajarito Mountain has beautiful views! From the summit you can see the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southern Rock Mountains, the Valles Caldera National Preserve, and even the Sandia Mountains.

Comment below and let us know what you love about skiing or snowboarding at Pajarito Mountain!

3 Reasons We Love RRSA

Jan 23, 2017 by Kelsie Stelting

Red River Ski & Summer Area is a not-so hidden gem in the southern Rockies. Not only is Red River a great place to go skiing or snowboarding with 18 feet of snow each year and trails appropriate for all levels, but there are plenty of other things to love as well. Here are three reasons why we love Red River.

Quiet Town

Red River is the hometown everyone wishes they had. It’s a place where everyone greets you with a smile, no one is too busy for small talk, and everyone you meet feels like a part of your family. Combine that was great places to eat and a ski area within walking distance, you’ve got a vacation spot that will have you coming back year after year.

Events

A family vacation spot needs to have something for the entire family. Red River Ski & Summer area hosts events year-round that everyone can enjoy. Like fireworks in the winter? Check out the torchlight parade. Don’t want to ski or snowboard? Go tubing instead. Want the best views of the mountain? Strap yourself in and zipline. Want to visit the beach in New Mexico? Snowboard Lesson at RRSA

Jan 16, 2017 by Kelsie Stelting

“If you don’t do it this year, you’ll be one year older when you do.” – Warren Miller

Where was Warren Miller when I was sitting at the top of a gentle slope trying to figure out how in the world to stand up with both feet strapped to a snowboard?

See, this weekend at Red River Ski & Summer Area, two other adult students and myself learned to snowboard. One had never snowboarded before, one had only skied, and I hadn’t tried to make my way down a snowy mountain since I was 12 years old. So, while 6-year-olds burned trails of snowdust down the mountain, our instructor, Adam Duran, taught us common mountain decency (pay attention to the signs and the people in front of you), snowboarding jargon, and eventually we tried the sport out for ourselves.

The first practical part of the lesson was how to strap ourselves into our snowboards. It sounds simple, but add three sweaters, bibs, a winter coat, scarves, goggles, and gloves, and you’ve got yourself a modified—and solvable—rubix cube.

After everyone had maneuvered the straps, it was time to “skate.” Skating is snowboarding with only one foot strapped in. This is maybe one of the most important moves because you need to skate to get on and off of lifts and around flat areas.

Once we’d proven that we could skate around without causing harm to ourselves or others, it was time to move on to more challenging things… like toeside and heelside turns.

Side note: If you attend a lesson, you will most likely spend about half of it bottom down in the snow. Just remember, it’s a lot better than spending a day bottom down on the couch watching TV.

Adam had us walk up a slight slope and then attempt the toeside turn on the way down. Then do it all over again. My classmates got the hang of the toeside turn fairly quickly, but I thought it might be the death of me. When I finally completed a turn without face-planting, I got a high-five, a smile, and we were able to move on to the next challenge: the lift.

Red River Ski & Summer Area has a nice feature of a beginner lift which was essentially a conveyor belt that carried us up the learning slope. I’m so grateful for this lift because getting on a lift that takes you all the way up the mountain can be daunting. But, in a controlled environment with other beginners, it didn’t feel quite so intimidating.

Even though it was a “bunny slope,” I’m going to admit that staring down the hill, toeside fails fresh on my mind, I was slightly nervous. Cue the part where Adam might have needed Warren Miller’s backup.

Here was the part where we secured both of our feet in the board and tried the “falling leaf.” A falling leaf is where you slide down in a Z pattern, not pointing your board straight down the slope. Turns out, after I stood up (with Adam’s help), I was much better at the falling leaf than the toeside turns!

We practiced the falling leaf several times on the beginner’s slope, and then Adam challenged us with the real deal: the green trail. I quickly learned that the beginner’s slope that had been a challenge was far overshadowed by this new task.

Even though the task was new, the movements weren’t. Adam reminded us to lean into the direction we were going, to take a deep breath, and, most importantly, to enjoy the ride.

As my lesson drew to a close, I was midway down the green trail, somewhere between remembering to take a breath and being terrified of falling down, I realized something: I had skied New Mexico.

Trying something new, with no idea whether or not you’ll be good or bad at it, is such an important part of progress in life. Trying new things keeps us open to amazing opportunities. Failing at new things makes us humble. And finding success, however small, reminds us of perseverance ability to overcome and conquer.

5 Things to Know Before a Lesson

Jan 16, 2017 by Kelsie Stelting

A lesson is a crucial part of learning to ski or snowboard and for the most effective lesson possible, it is important to be prepared. Remember going to school for the first time? You couldn’t just show up and expect it to go well. You had to bring your supplies, dress well, and most importantly, have the right mindset to be successful. Snowboarding is much the same.

Know the Lingo

Do you know what a toeside turn is? What about base? PPTT? Edge? Lift? Shredding? If you’re 100% new to winter sports, first, welcome to one of the greatest winter pastimes, and second, check out the Ski New Mexico Blog to familiarize yourself with the lingo so your first day on the mountain isn’t totally overwhelming.

Prepare for the Elements

All it takes to make a good day bad is a cold nose and wet fingers. Make sure that you have waterproof or resistant clothing and dress in warm layers. Learn more about what to pack here. This printable packing check list is a great resource for your skiing or snowboarding trip that will help you make sure you’re prepared when you hit the slopes!

Be Early

By the time you get all of your extra layers on, retrieve your lift tickets, rent your equipment, and walk to the training area, you’ll have spent about 45 minutes. Be sure to arrive 45 minutes to an hour before your lesson is scheduled to begin so you’re on time.

Humble Yourself

Very few things in life are certain, but I can guarantee you that you will spend just as much time with your bottom planted in the snow as you will standing on the board. When you’re having a hard time finding your edge and you’ve fallen down for what feels like the millionth time, remember that every person shredding by you on the trails started out exactly where you are now.

Prepare for the Aftermath

In the evening after your lesson, drink plenty of water, stretch, and get a good night’s sleep. In the morning, you’ll find bruises and discover sore muscles you didn’t even know you had. The best way to work out a sore muscle is to stretch and then go back out on the board and do it all over again!

If you’re curious about what a snowboarding lesson is like, you can read about my latest experience here. A snowboard or ski lesson will be such an incredible experience for you if you stick with it. You’ll make friends with your instructor and fellow learners, you’ll gain resilience and grit from trying something new and challenging, and, ultimately, you’ll get started on a new skill that will take you into the mountains every chance you get!

Comment below with questions or extra advice, and share this article with your friends that are considering a lesson. If you’re curious about what a snowboarding lesson is like, you can read about one boarder’s experience here.

Packing for a Ski Trip to NM?

Dec 12, 2016 by Kelsie Stelting

There are two kinds of travelers: the kind who start packing weeks before the trip, the open suitcase gleaming like a beacon of adventure, or the ones who wait until the absolute last minute to pack, and have a million pairs of socks because they always have to buy extra on trips. Planner or procrastinator, all travelers could benefit from a check list. Print of the detailed packing list and read along. This list should serve as a starting point to what is sure to be a wonderful trip in New Mexico.

Clothing

Clothing should be waterproof, warm, and comfortable. Always dress in layers as the weather can change throughout the day, and your body temperature will change depending on the amount of activity. Bring a waterproof bag with you, or wear a fanny pack underneath your coat to keep your items safe, dry, and available.

Gear

Oftentimes gear can be rented, which can be an economical option for growing children or people who don’t ski regularly. If you’ve always wanted to buy your own gear, but aren’t sure where to start, try a demo. A demo is a good way to test out gear before taking the plunge. Once you’ve decided to buy, backcountry.com is a good place to look.

Electronics

Electronics are a great way to document your trip. You can use your camera to snap photos of the family in beautiful scenery or mount your Go Pro to your helmet to share your experience with friends from an entirely different angle. Keep in mind, moving electronics from a warm area (like a car/hotel) to a cold area can cause internal condensation which may damage your electronics. Store all of your items in a daypack like this Camelback backpack or adventure packs from Burton or Dakine. Only bring the electronics you will need and be sure to keep them in a waterproof case or bag. A skiing/snowboarding trip is the perfect time to connect with nature and your loved ones.

Toiletries/Hygiene

Snow reflects sunlight, so it is imperative to wear sunscreen and lip balm with UV protection to prevent sunburn. In case of sunburn, be sure to bring lotion and aloe vera cream to rehydrate and soothe your skin. Always carry a first aid kit with you in case of injury.

 Food

Skiing/snowboarding is a sport. Be sure adequately hydrate and fuel your body with light, energy-dense foods while on the slopes.

Miscellaneous

It’s always better to be over-prepared than underprepared. Consider your personal needs to ensure you have everything you need.

Print the PDF list to keep track of what you’re packing so, planner or procrastinator, you can have what you need? Warm wishes for a wonderful trip in the Land of Enchantment!

Do you have anything to add to this list? Extra tips? Comment below!
