Packing for a Ski Trip to NM?

by Kelsie Stelting December 12, 2016

There are two kinds of travelers: the kind who start packing weeks before the trip, the open suitcase gleaming like a beacon of adventure, or the ones who wait until the absolute last minute to pack, and have a million pairs of socks because they always have to buy extra on trips. Planner or procrastinator, all travelers could benefit from a check list. Print of the detailed packing list and read along. This list should serve as a starting point to what is sure to be a wonderful trip in New Mexico.

Clothing

Clothing should be waterproof, warm, and comfortable. Always dress in layers as the weather can change throughout the day, and your body temperature will change depending on the amount of activity. Bring a waterproof bag with you, or wear a fanny pack underneath your coat to keep your items safe, dry, and available.

Gear

Oftentimes gear can be rented, which can be an economical option for growing children or people who don’t ski regularly. If you’ve always wanted to buy your own gear, but aren’t sure where to start, try a demo. A demo is a good way to test out gear before taking the plunge. Once you’ve decided to buy, backcountry.com is a good place to look.

Electronics

Electronics are a great way to document your trip. You can use your camera to snap photos of the family in beautiful scenery or mount your Go Pro to your helmet to share your experience with friends from an entirely different angle. Keep in mind, moving electronics from a warm area (like a car/hotel) to a cold area can cause internal condensation which may damage your electronics. Store all of your items in a daypack like this Camelback backpack or adventure packs from Burton or Dakine. Only bring the electronics you will need and be sure to keep them in a waterproof case or bag. A skiing/snowboarding trip is the perfect time to connect with nature and your loved ones.

Toiletries/Hygiene

Snow reflects sunlight, so it is imperative to wear sunscreen and lip balm with UV protection to prevent sunburn. In case of sunburn, be sure to bring lotion and aloe vera cream to rehydrate and soothe your skin. Always carry a first aid kit with you in case of injury.

 Food

Skiing/snowboarding is a sport. Be sure adequately hydrate and fuel your body with light, energy-dense foods while on the slopes.

Miscellaneous

It’s always better to be over-prepared than underprepared. Consider your personal needs to ensure you have everything you need.

Print the PDF list to keep track of what you’re packing so, planner or procrastinator, you can have what you need? Warm wishes for a wonderful trip in the Land of Enchantment!
