Christi Hield

Christi Hield was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1963. After graduating from high school in 1981, she moved to New Mexico to attend the University of New Mexico, where she earned a degree in Recreation Therapy in 1986. Shortly after, Christi married Steve Hield, and in 1990, the couple began volunteering with the Adaptive Ski Program (ASP), combining their love for skiing with a dedication to serving their community.

Christi’s natural talent and compassion soon caught the attention of ASP founder Ken Ley, who encouraged her to become Executive Director in 1994. Under her leadership until 2006, the program flourished—growing to more than 100 volunteers across Sandia Peak and Ski Santa Fe, with over 1,000 adaptive lessons taught each season. During this time, the Hields settled in Santa Fe and raised two children.

Thanks to Christi’s tireless efforts, the Adaptive Ski Program gained a strong financial footing and established dedicated buildings at both ski areas to house vital equipment for student lessons. Her infectious energy inspired countless volunteers and students, leaving a lasting impact on the disabled community and the ski industry in New Mexico.

In recognition of her significant contributions, the New Mexico legislature honored Christi in 1999 for her work with the disabled community. Though many lives were positively touched by her leadership, Christi herself found deep fulfillment in her 16 years with the program.

Her legacy endures in the thriving ASP programs at Ski Santa Fe and Sandia Peak, where a waiting list of eager volunteers continues the mission she helped build—a testament to the solid foundation laid by Christi Hield and the enduring vision of Ken Ley.
