Harvey & Reserl Chalker

Harvey and Reserl Chalker met at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Ski Resort in Bavaria, Germany in 1956. Harvey was working as a ski patrolman for the U.S. Army’s post-WWII occupation force and Reserl was one of the local expert skiers. After Harvey moved back to the United States, Reserl followed him in 1958. Harvey was managing the newly opened Santa Fe Ski Basin where he offered Dadou Mayer a job as ski instructor there after Ernie Blake had fired him the first year he came to Taos.

Harvey and Reserl were married in 1959 while both were working at the Santa Fe Ski Basin. Reserl did some work as a ski model and appeared on the cover of Skiing Magazine in 1961.

They decided to open a ski shop at the Ski Basin in 1964. Two years later, they moved their shop, called Alpine Sports, to a location on Marcy Street in downtown Santa Fe. In 1972, they relocated the store to its present location on Sandoval Street and have been recognized numerous times as one of the top ski shops in the Rocky Mountain region.

Both Harvey and Reserl have been active in skiing and the ski business for over 50 years. Harvey has served on the board of the National Ski and Snowboard Retailers Association and has been actively supporting civic groups in Santa Fe.

The Chalkers sold Alpine Sports and retired in 2015.
