The Manhattan Project
Los Alamos was the home of the Manhattan Project, the secret laboratory where scientists designed and built the world’s first atomic weapons. Top scientific minds of the day, Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, Norris Bradbury, Richard Feynman, Hans Bethe, and many more, left their mark in this once-secret city that is still home to Los Alamos National Laboratory and is designated as an American World War II Heritage City. The park visitor center, museums, World War II-era gathering places, pre-Manhattan Project structures and other sites share a multitude of stories that bring the history of the Manhattan Project to life. These places tell the story of a secret city and its role in the design, testing, and construction of the world’s first atomic weapons.
